Ebola

Democratic Republic of the Congo

On September 14, Africa CDC (Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) reported 40 suspected Ebola cases, including 17 new ones since the previous update on September 5. Additionally, 25 cases have been confirmed, with 20 new confirmations. A total of 24 deaths have been reported, 9 more than on September 5.

On September 14, 2025, vaccination against Ebola began in Bulape Health Zone, Kasai Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to the World Health Organization (WHO Africa). The first 2,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine were deployed, with 45,000 more approved. 

 

MPOX

Africa

Sierra Leone: The latest update from the World Health Organization shows 5,266 confirmed mpox cases as of September 7, a surge of 21 cases since August 31. According to a report from Africa CDC on September 14, these cases are linked to clade 2b, with 6,5% of confirmed cases in children under 15 years of age and 51% of cases occurring in males.

Uganda: As of September 7, 2025, Uganda reported 6,660 confirmed mpox cases, according to the World Health Organization. This is an increase of 107 cases since August 31. As shown in Figure 3.2.1, case numbers in Uganda have begun to rise again after recent weeks of slower growth. These cases are linked to clade 1b. 

Guinea: As of September 7, 2025, The World Health Organization has reported 915 cases in 2025 and one death in Guinea. This is an increase of 82 cases since August 31. The outbreak is linked to clade 2b.  

  

MEASLES

U.S.

On September 12, 2025, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed the death of a school-age child from subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), a rare and fatal complication of measles. The child had contracted measles during infancy, prior to being eligible for vaccination.

As of September 10, 2025, Center for Disease Control reports a total of 1,454 confirmed measles cases in the U.S. in 2025. 12 % of cases have required hospitalization (180 cases of 1,454), and three deaths have been reported. 

Canada.

As of September 8, 2025, Canada has reported 4,902 measles cases where 70% occurred in children, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. Ontario accounts for 49% of the total, followed by Alberta with 38%. 88% were unvaccinated, and 8 % required hospitalization. Genotype D8 remains the most frequently detected strain. 1 death has been reported. 

 

POLIO

As of September 10, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative reports new detections in Africa. In Chad, two cVDPV2 cases, one cVDPV3 case, and two cVDPV2-positive environmental samples have been confirmed. Nigeria has reported four cVDPV2 cases. In Somalia, one cVDPV2 case and one positive environmental sample have been detected. Algeria and Tanzania have each reported one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample.

H5N1

U.S.

As of September 5, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not reported any cases of person-to-person transmission of H5N1 in the United States. The total remains at 70 confirmed cases and one death.
